Black or Silver? Reviewing the Latest 40k Combat Patrols and Codex Drops

Black or Silver? Reviewing the Latest 40k Combat Patrols and Codex Drops

Wargame Portal Customer Service |

Another week, another set of powerful warriors unleashed upon the galaxy. Whether you're a zealous crusader, a psychic juggernaut, a hungry alien swarm, or a saga-seeking son of Fenris, this wave of Warhammer 40,000 releases has something for you. But let’s break it down from our perspective here at the Portal.

Black Templars: Zeal Never Sleeps

The Emperor’s most fanatical sons return in force with a Codex Supplement, two new character kits, and an updated Combat Patrol. We’re big fans of how characterful this range continues to be—each release dripping with gothic, fire-lit fury.

  • Codex Supplement: Black Templars – 96 pages of glorious zealotry, with three unique Detachments and 18 datasheets. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it gives the Templars their rightful place in 10th Edition.

  • Crusade Ancient & Execrator – Two gorgeous new sculpts. The banner options on the Ancient are particularly impressive for narrative hobbyists, while the Execrator oozes menace and faith.

  • Combat Patrol – A solid melee-focused starter led by the Emperor’s Champion himself. No complaints here—especially since all the units included are staples of a proper crusade.

Verdict: The Black Templars are still one of the most iconic and cohesive subfactions in 40k. This release does them justice.

Grey Knights: The Silver Stalls

The Grey Knights are back in force with a shiny new Codex, a Battleforce, and a new(?) Combat Patrol

  • Codex: Grey Knights – Packed with lore, five detachments, and 25 datasheets. If you're a fan of Titan’s secretive warriors, you won’t be disappointed by the book itself.

  • Sanctic Conclave Battleforce – A fantastic value box with a versatile loadout, including the new Grand Master Dreadknight options. This one’s a strong pickup if you want to field a hammer-heavy force.

  • Combat Patrol: Grey Knights – While the Grey Knights are getting a new Combat Patrol for this edition, the internet is not too hot on this box, and some of the criticism is justified. It’s a strange mix of mostly older kits that are starting to show their age and some suspect will get a replacement in an upcoming edition.

Our Take: While we are suspecting some really cool rules for the Grey Knights as they are always an interesting faction, and really loving the upgrade kit for the Dread Knight, some of the other offerings here leave a bit to be desired. Some were hoping for updated kits this edition, but maybe next edition? We can certainly hope so.

Space Wolves: Teeth Bared

The sons of Russ return with a thematic, aggressive Combat Patrol that’s hard to argue with:

  • Combat Patrol: Space Wolves – A charismatic leader in Fyrri Askar leads Blood Claws, Wulfen, and Terminators into battle. Every kit here has strong tabletop presence and narrative flavor. This one’s a winner.

Verdict: A strong box, great value, and a good entry point into the fang-bearing ferocity of Fenris.

Tyranid Assault Brood: Bite-Sized Terror

Hive fleets never sleep, and this Combat Patrol showcases one of their more diverse offerings:

  • Combat Patrol: Tyranid Assault Brood – The Parasite of Mortrex is a fun (and fast) centerpiece model, and the rest of the box provides a good mix of melee and ranged threats. It’s a fantastic pick for players who want a dynamic, mobile swarm without starting too big.

Verdict: Well-balanced, thematic, and fun—this box will see consistent restocks from us.

Final Thoughts

This wave is a strong one overall. The Black Templars have a fiery new shine, Space Wolves get a pack worth howling for, and Tyranids continue their biomass buffet. As for the Grey Knights… we’re watching and waiting. This Combat Patrol feels like a placeholder before a much-needed update. For now, we’ll keep the silver stockpile small.
