Introducing the Bastion™ XL Dice Rolling Tray

For years, dice trays have mostly been treated as an afterthought.

They keep dice from flying across the table, and that is about it.

With the Bastion™ XL Dice Rolling Tray, we wanted to build something different. Something designed specifically for tabletop wargaming, where players are not rolling two or three dice at a time, but handfuls of them throughout an entire game.

The result is the newest addition to Wargame Portal’s growing lineup of in-house gaming tools.

More Than a Dice Tray

The Bastion was designed around a simple problem: dice management during a game can get messy fast.

Dice end up scattered across the table, mixed between different rolls, pushed into terrain, or taking up valuable battlefield space.

Bastion gives those dice a dedicated home.

The oversized rolling area keeps your rolls contained, while integrated side storage gives you space to organize standard 16 mm dice between attacks, saves, and other rolls.

Instead of constantly clearing dice from the battlefield, everything stays where it belongs.

Designed Around the Table

One of the biggest considerations during development was size.

The Bastion measures approximately 8.6 inches wide by 13 inches long, giving players considerably more rolling room than a traditional compact dice tray.

More importantly, it was designed with the dimensions of modern tabletop wargaming in mind.

A standard Warhammer-sized battlefield uses a 44" × 60" gaming area on a typical 4' × 6' table. That leaves additional space around the battlefield that often becomes a dumping ground for dice, measuring tools, books, tokens, and everything else players need during a game.

Bastion turns part of that space into an organized gaming station without intruding on the battlefield itself.

A Better Rolling Surface

Inside the Bastion is a removable neoprene rolling mat.

The neoprene helps soften dice rolls, reduces noise, and provides a cleaner rolling surface than throwing dice directly onto a hard plastic tray.

Because the mat is removable, it can also be taken out for cleaning or replaced as additional designs become available.

Inspired by the Way We Actually Play

If you watch professional battle reports, you will often see players using dedicated areas beside the battlefield to roll and organize dice.

There is a reason for that.

Keeping dice contained makes games easier to follow, keeps the battlefield cleaner, and makes large-volume rolls much easier to manage.

We wanted to take that concept and turn it into a purpose-built product that any player could add to their own table.

The Bastion is not intended to be another small tray that gets thrown into a gaming bag and forgotten.

It is meant to become part of your tabletop setup.

The Beginning of Something Bigger

The Bastion is also another step toward expanding Wargame Portal beyond simply being a retailer.

We play these games, we use these tools, and increasingly we want to design products around the problems we encounter ourselves at the table.

Bastion joins products like the TargetLock™ Line Laser as part of a growing family of Wargame Portal gaming tools designed specifically for miniature wargamers.

There is plenty more we want to build.

For now, though, the Bastion has arrived.
