Incident Report – Shopify Backend Update (Email Template Misfire)

Incident Report – Shopify Backend Update (Email Template Misfire)

WGP DevOps |

Summary:
We were made aware of an upstream change pushed by Shopify that altered our transactional email templates without notification. This change injected misleading delivery estimates into shipping confirmation e-mails.

Details:

  • Affected emails: Pre-order shipment confirmations and orders fulfilled around that time period.

  • Issue: Some customers received emails stating false delivery estimates.

  • Reality: As documented in our Help Center, preorders do not leave our warehouse until release day (Saturday) or shortly after.

  • Root problem: The templating logic for delivery dates was modified in Shopify’s backend. Our code was not changed.

Why this doesn’t make sense:
If an order ships on release Saturday, it cannot physically arrive the same day. Any email suggesting otherwise is incorrect. Please disregard these estimates provided by Shopify and go with what the tracking number provided states on the carriers page.

Temporary Mitigation:

  • All shipping estimates have been disabled from outbound emails until Shopify resolves the backend template logic.

  • No impact to actual shipping timelines. Fulfillment continues as documented.

Next Steps:

  • We are working with Shopify to roll back or patch the update.

  • Monitoring email output until confirmation of fix.

TLDR:
This is a provider-introduced bug. Orders remain unaffected; only customer-facing messaging was impacted. Reach out to the customer support team if you have questions.
