The Red Grail Returns

The Red Grail Returns

Corbulo is back, the grail is raised, and the Blood Angels have another reason to reach for the red paint.

Games Workshop has confirmed Codex: Blood Angels for spring 2027, accompanied by new miniatures. The first revealed is Sanguinary High Priest Corbulo, returning with a refreshed sculpt and a very familiar piece of Chapter silverware.

There is something reassuring about a battlefield physician arriving with a chainsword and a ceremonial drinking vessel. Reassuring for the Blood Angels, anyway.

Corbulo Cleans Up Nicely

The upcoming miniature for Sanguinary High Priest Corbulo

The new miniature keeps the raised Red Grail and chainsword at the center of the design. Red armor, white winged decoration, medical equipment, and a firmly planted stance give him a strong identity without requiring an enormous scenic base to establish his importance.

The reveal image also shows an alternative head with a mechanical face covering and prominent lens.

Our preference is the uncovered face. It gives the model a more personal quality, while the raised grail naturally draws attention toward his expression. The covered version makes him look more clinical, which is an interesting contrast to all the religious ornamentation.

What we particularly like is the pose.

He looks like he is rallying the warriors around him rather than trying to win a competition for the most dramatic leap off a ruined building. There is room for both approaches, but a commanding stance suits a High Priest.

The studio scheme also gives painters a useful contrast between the red armor, pale decorative elements, gold details, and dark weapon. We would keep that separation in our own version rather than weathering everything into the same shade of battlefield grime.

This is someone whose ceremonial equipment ought to look important, even when the rest of the battlefield is falling apart.

More Than First Aid

Sanguinary Priests do more than treat injuries and recover gene-seed. Their rituals help the Blood Angels control the Red Thirst, placing them at the center of the Chapter’s struggle to maintain its noble appearance while keeping its bloodlust in check.

Quite a demanding job description. Especially when the patients can punch through a wall.

That makes Corbulo an appealing character to bring back into focus. He represents something specifically Blood Angels rather than simply being another decorated officer.

For us, that matters more than adding another weapon option to the character roster. The miniature gives the Chapter’s traditions and rituals a visible place among the jump packs, death masks, and assault troops.

It also makes him an attractive collection piece before we know anything about his eventual battlefield efficiency.

The Chaplain Gets His Pistol

There is a nearer-term rules announcement as well.

December’s Warhammer 40,000 update will add a datasheet for the Blood Angels Chaplain with Jump Pack that supports his inferno pistol. GW has scheduled the broader quarterly update for the week beginning December 7.

Apparently, descending from the sky with a skull-faced preacher was not quite threatening enough.

This is rules support for the Chaplain, not another newly revealed miniature. We will need the finished datasheet before judging the weapon profile, restrictions, or points implications, but giving the character support for his distinctive equipment is welcome.

A First Look, Not the Whole Wave

The rest of the miniature lineup, Corbulo’s new rules, and specific preorder dates have not been revealed.

That leaves plenty to discuss later without turning this first announcement into a wishlist presented as fact.

For now, our interest is firmly on Corbulo himself. The raised grail, readable pose, and combination of medical and ceremonial details give him enough character to stand out without overwhelming the model.

We would rather have that than a bigger base and another three feet of decorative masonry.

The rules will determine where he belongs in an army list. The miniature already makes a convincing argument for a place in the collection.

And yes, we would paint the cup before the rest of him.

Priorities.
