Not all machines remain what they were built to be.
Constructed at the English Electric Works in Preston, “B for Bertie” began service as nothing more than a standard Mk I automaton. That changed during Operation Cavalier near Antwerp in June 1946. Caught in a brutal ambush by Axis Panzermechs, Bertie was separated from its unit and presumed destroyed in the aftermath of the engagement.
But Bertie did not fall.
Damaged, low on power, and alone, it returned to the battlefield long after the fighting had moved on. What happened next was something no engineer had planned for. Instead of shutting down, its primitive logic systems adapted. Bertie scavenged what it needed to survive, replacing damaged components with parts taken from fallen automatons, gathering power cells, and arming itself from the wreckage of war. What emerged was no longer a standard unit, but something evolving, something learning.
In Konflikt '47, Bertie represents a unique presence on the battlefield. A lone survivor turned self-sustaining war machine, it embodies resilience, unpredictability, and the eerie potential of autonomous systems pushed beyond their limits. Whether used as a narrative centerpiece or a characterful addition to your force, Bertie brings a story unlike any other to your army.
