The Dead Prepare to March: A Review

The Dead Prepare to March: A Review

The latest pre-order release for Warhammer Age of Sigmar ushers in the chilling resurgence of the Soulblight Gravelords, as Nagash’s sinister armies rise once again. This comprehensive launch features an updated Battletome packed with background lore, refined rules, and thrilling new miniatures, offering a robust refresh for fans of these undead overlords.

Battletome: Soulblight Gravelords is central to this release, providing collectors and players alike with a rich trove of content, from immersive background material detailing the ancient Barrow Kingdoms and their vampiric overlords to extensive rules, artefacts, spells, and compelling new gameplay options like the Anvil of Apotheosis and Path to Glory campaign mechanics.

The Gamer’s Edition of the Battletome also makes its return, delivering the same depth in a more compact format with handy reference cards—a welcome addition for those seeking convenience at the gaming table. Please note that these are only available directly from the Source, and third-party retailers do not sell these copies.

Prince Vhordrai, the enigmatic and lethal master of the Crimson Keep, arrives as a standout centerpiece model. Mounted on the fearsome Draconith Shordemaire, this miniature is impressively detailed, capable of dominating both visually and in gameplay. Its kit versatility also allows players to construct a Revenant Draconith, providing additional strategic options.

Among the exciting new kits are the Blades of the Hollow King, a compelling narrative-driven unit that seamlessly integrates with existing Death armies.

The Vampire Lord on Nightmare Steed and the Wight King on Skeletal Steed further expand players’ tactical choices, offering customizability and robust battlefield presence.

The Barrow Knights and Barrow Guard kits are remarkable for their detailed options and versatility, ideal for collectors looking to bolster their forces with visually impressive, elite undead units.

The refreshed Deathrattle Skeletons are particularly notable. Redesigned for easier assembly, this updated kit includes interchangeable weapon and shield options, enhancing both hobby experience and tabletop flexibility. Interestingly, these redesigned skeletons have also been integrated into the returning Spearhead: Bloodcrave Hunt box, making this repackaged set even more appealing. It maintains its original composition—a Vampire Lord, Blood Knights, and Vargheists—but the introduction of the new skeleton models revitalizes the set significantly.

Complementing the miniatures, the Soulblight Gravelords Dice and Soulblight Gravelords Manifestations add thematic depth and practical utility, while the Cursed Sepulchre terrain offers strategic gameplay advantages, doubling as a Nexus of Grief for Nighthaunt armies.

Overall, this Soulblight Gravelords release presents a superb package, effectively enhancing existing collections and providing compelling entry points for new players. The introduction of improved miniatures, particularly the Deathrattle Skeletons in the Spearhead box, underscores Games Workshop’s continued attention to detail and commitment to enriching player experience. It’s undoubtedly a rewarding time to command Nagash’s dread legions.
